The Lancet profiles Lisa Bero’s “path of most resistance”

Health policy expert Lisa Bero, PhD, is hailed in the latest issue of The Lancet for tackling hot-button subjects such as financial biases in drug research.

The profile titled “taking the path of most resistance,” is both online and in the respected global medical journal’s May 19, 2012 print issue. It describes how, after earning her doctorate in pharmacology, Bero chose to pursue the cause of evidence-based medicine and research bias in the face of detractors and even threats.

Cancer drug dosing in kids, medication-related delirium, and battery swallowing take top honors at clinical pharmacy seminar

Studies of cancer drug dosing in children, possible medication links to delirium in hospital patients, and how to decide when swallowed batteries may call for invasive removal took top honors at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy’s 14th annual Spring Research Seminar.

The poster session, covering a total of 71 projects, highlighted research by UCSF School of Pharmacy student pharmacists, residents, and faculty members, was held on May 1, 2012 on the Parnassus Campus.

Commentary

The nation reached a quiet health milestone this spring far removed from the Supreme Court considerations on health reform. In a public hearing hosted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and attended mainly by medication experts, we moved one step closer to giving consumers greater access to—and we hope far better use of—medications to treat chronic conditions and health emergencies.

At hand is a new plan the FDA is considering to switch certain widely used prescription medications from prescription (Rx) to nonprescription status, provided that specific conditions of safe nonprescription use are met.

Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, PharmD, dean of the UCSF School of Pharmacy, was honored by the UCSF Medical Center on May 4, 2012 for her “exceptional vision as a leader, commitment to patients, compassion as a human being, and dedication to UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.”

The leadership award is especially significant, according to Koda-Kimble, “because the Medical Center is at the heart of my career as a pharmacist.”
